Do you want him circumcised to avoid future issues with his long foreskin or for the overall benefits?

I take it you are asking how to approach your son about getting circumcised because you have a preference for it?
When did you become in favour of circumcision? As others have said, ask him in a caring way if everything is working ok with his foreskin. Ask him if he knows any circumcised boys in his class or on his sports teams and find out if he would be comfortable with a circumcised penis. From there you could gently suggest you yourself think its a better look and has hygiene advantages and that you think it would be good for him and if he would like it for himself you would fully support him.

@SvenSachsen I can totally understand his concerns and negative reactions to the procedure.
But as a European male, he will be the exciting difference between his foreskin-equipped peers and will be adored by those who seek that difference. Not to mention that he is favored by young women from the US, Australia and other circumcising nations.This is something many European parents don't know: Circumcised boys are favored in Western culture outside of Europe.

There is a lot to say about your topic. Why did your wife insist on your son being circumcised?
In this difficult phase, it can help to emphasize the benefits of circumcision to show him that everything is OK. He may look different to his friends, but that will change over time.

I also think it is best to circumcise before school age, but I am unsure whether immediately after birth or at 3-5 years of age is better.
I like the idea of completely separating the foreskin from the glans before removal for an optimal cosmetic result.

People believe that without foreskin you have no feeling, no sensation and no pleasure. This is wrong and far from the truth. First of all, it's just skin. Secondly the general sensations I feel have increased.

Tell your lovely lady not to worry if you get circumcised. Urinary tract infections will disappear, your cleanliness will improve, and she'll be surprised at the sexual and visual benefits. Take the plunge, you'll only lose excess skin, but you'll gain a lot.

you really do have a growing community of mothers who are expressing a preference for circumcision on their sons. I take it you've had quite the influence in this?
Are these mothers also asking their husbands to do the same, if not done already?
It's great to see it's being more widely accepted.

I think you will find, now that you have a house full of circumcised men/boys, keeping the little one with his hat will be harder to endure. I'm positive, even if you choose to keep it while he is developing and the foreskin is still separating from the glans, the moment it can be fully retracted is the moment you will be booking him in for its removal. Honestly, for me the only reason I would wait is to not forcibly separate the foreskin and glans, but at the same time, the sooner it is done, the better for the boy.

Hello Sandra,

Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your little boy!
In my view, there are only 2 real decisions for the best time of circumcision.
1) Do it soon after birth. In this way, healing is quick, the boy doesn't really experience it and usually the cosmetic result is great. It is only negative if a separation between the foreskin and glans should be necessary.
2) Wait for the boy to completely withdraw his foreskin and then let him circumcise. In this way there is no potential for glans. However, the boy would lose the initial advantages of early circumcision and the possibility of phimosis, etc.

I am curious about the daughter influence as well. Are they older? Have they had experiences with circumcised boyfriends?

If you are convinced circumcision is something you would like for yourself, go for it! Be open with your parents, give them good reasoning why you want it. You may even find them very supportive. No matter where in the world you go, you will either be the accepted form or the pleasantly surprising curiosity with a circumcised penis.

I'm from Australia and whilst the standard practice here (if you choose to circumcise) is to have boys circumcised as infants up to 3 months of age, I actually see merit, in what appears to be a more standard practice in Germany, in having a boy circumcised between 3–6 years.
Even though a boy is more active at that time, their foreskin will almost certainly have separated fully where it can be drawn back unrestricted, and the healing time is still quick and relatively pain free. A better situation than having to forcibly separate the foreskin from the glans as per an infant circumcision.
